The Mercantile Store
At Pete Hewitt Woodwork, we had the pleasure of designing and building a bespoke shelving unit for The Mercantile Store, a unique lifestyle shop located in the heart of Stockbridge, Edinburgh. Known for its curated selection of high-quality homeware, gifts, and luxury items, the store blends beauty and functionality in every corner.
For this project, we created a single tall shelving unit, designed to take full advantage of the store’s impressive high ceilings. The unit was built using a combination of birch plywood and solid oak, chosen for their durability and natural warmth. To seamlessly integrate the unit into the space, the shelving was painted to match the walls, ensuring it subtly complemented the overall interior design.
The top shelving section was stained ‘Chocolate’ by Rubio Monocoat, adding a sophisticated contrast to the painted lower section. This careful attention to detail resulted in a unit that blends practicality with elegance, offering ample display space without overwhelming the room.
To achieve a clean, minimalist look, we used Divario fixings by Lamello, securing the shelves without visible hardware for a sleek and refined finish. The result is a bespoke shelving unit that perfectly balances functionality, precision, and timeless design.
We are proud to have contributed to The Mercantile Store, enhancing the space with a piece that not only serves a functional purpose but also elevates the overall shopping experience.
